The Supportive Education Center of MahmoudAbad has joined the Read with Me project since February 2015. The Child-centered library of this center was established in July 2015 by the efforts of the Institute for Research on the History of Children’s Literature and a benefactor in the framework of Read with Me and started giving services to children and adolescents in this neighborhood and families of workers in brick-making kilns of MahmoudAbad.
Workshops on the subjects of “Librarianship”, “knowing Children’s Literature and Quality Books”, “Reading Aloud”, “Drama”, “Learning Sounds” and “Learning Alphabet” have been held for tutors in this center and Reading Aloud and Book Related Activity Sessions are held three days a week for children. Also three rounds of “Reading with Babies and Toddlers” workshops have been held in this center for 62 mothers both pregnant with children and parenting children from 0 to 3 years old who live in brick-making kilns in MahmoudAbad.
Since October 2015, “Dramatic arts” workshops have been held biweekly for children between 7 to 14 years old in this center.
In February 2015 the groundworks of joining The Supportive Education Center of MahmoudAbad to Read with Me were laid through meetings, visits and negotiations. In July 2015, the Child-centered library of this center was established by the efforts of the Institute for Research on the History of Children’s Literature and a benefactor in the framework of RWM project. This library which has started giving services to children and adolescents in this neighborhood and families of the workers of MahmoudAbad kilns since mid-July 2015, has two sections of preschool and elementary school and holds Book Reading and book related activities sessions.
After planning and equipping the library, RWM experts held workshops on “Librarianship”, “Knowing Children’s Literature and Quality Books”, “Reading Aloud”, “Drama”, “Learning Sounds” and “Learning Alphabet” for tutors and librarians in this center to empower them in the field of book promotion and encouraging reading in children. Book Reading Sessions and book related activities are held three times a week in this center.
In the library’s summer plan, in addition to children covered by this center, 66 children of the kilns’ seasonal workers who had moved from Torbat-e Heydarieh, also participated in the book reading and book related activities.
Also, along with the opening of the library, the trainers from IRCHL started the “Reading with Babies and Toddlers” program in this center. This program has been implemented for three groups of mothers. In July 2015, the first group of mothers started to read books with their babies and toddlers based on this program and the second group started its activities in January 2016. In September 2016 the third round of workshops was held for mothers already in the program from January 2016 and the next round of the program was organized with the participation of 9 mothers (5 Iranian mothers and 4 Afghan mothers). In the first Read with Me conference, one of these mothers shared her experiences in reading for her child with the other participants.
“Reading with Babies and Toddlers sessions” are held in four courses during one year for mothers with babies from 0 to 3 years old. In the first course, mothers participate in four weekly sessions and learn read-aloud basics and receive their first book bag including “Baby Read-Aloud Basics”, “My First Library” book set and two spongy cubes in order to read with their babies. Next courses are held every three months and mothers receive a new book bag on every session containing quality books for their children. So during a year mothers are guided through the correct path of reading with their babies and let their children benefit from quality books from the first stages of their childhood under the supervision of the institute’s experts. In these sessions practical and theoretical education related to books are presented to mothers. Other than book reading they learn the right way of singing lullabies and songs and telling stories with dolls and they also learn to make books for their babies by themselves
Since October 2015 RWM experts have decided to hold a series of dramatic arts training workshops for children between 7 to 14 years old in order to increase their lingual and social skills. This program is implemented along with Book Reading Sessions once every two weeks. These children performed a play based on the book “The Lyrics of Gypsy’s Tar” in the two-day conference of RWM which captured the attention of the audience.
Children and young adults by the help of RWM’s dramatic experts get the chance to enjoy pure moments of creation and gain experience. They experience cooperation and partnership by performing different plays and they learn how to express their requests and interests and talk about them to each other.
In February 2015, an exhibition of activities done by mothers and children covered by this project was held in this center in order to attract the attention of families to the importance of book reading and book-related activities for children. In this exhibition, paintings, crafts and other handmade activities done by children and their teachers related to the reading and reading aloud sessions and also activities related to Creative Learning Packages including “Learning Sounds” and “Learning Math” and handmade books by mothers participating in “Reading with Babies and Toddlers” workshops were presented which were well received by children and their families.
