Workshop Title:
Children’s literature Workshop

Workshop Duration:
30-45 minutes

Workshop goals:
Cognition of Children’s literature concept, quality books and types of children books

Number of participants:
20 persons maximum

Workshops abstract:
In this workshop a definition of literature, children’s literature and quality books is given. Then the function and goals of children’s literature are discussed and then the types of children’s literature according to illustration and text and other type of children’s literature are introduced.

Workshop Title:
Cognition of Story Elements

Workshop Duration:
60 minutes

Workshop goals:
Primary cognition of Story Elements and the methods to share story elements with children and adolescents and its influence on children and adolescents’ comprehension

Number of participants:
Between 20 to 25 persons

Workshops abstract:
First the story elements are described and then a book is read aloud. In this workshop tutors learn why story elements should be noticed and how they can share these elements with children.

What is Reading aloud and how to hold a Reading aloud session

Workshop Duration:
30 minutes

Enabling teachers and families to make children interested in book reading

What do they learn in the workshop?
In this workshop the participant learns how to read aloud books to children. He comprehends how to hold a book and correctly read books in Reading Aloud sessions. He also understands how to manage sessions and learns effective reading aloud techniques.

Workshops abstract:
First a definition of Reading Aloud is given and then its necessity and the reason of its effect on children is explained. Then the activities before reading books, while reading books and after reading books are discussed. After it the participants read aloud practically to learn other points during the reading. Two thirds of the workshop time is spent on practical activity.

 

Workshop Title:
Learning Sounds and Learning Alphabet (One-day workshop in Read with Me project)

Workshop Duration:
4 hours (Learning Sounds 1.5, Learning Alphabet 1, Rhythm 1.5)

Families, kindergarten tutors, pre-school tutors, teachers of the first grade in elementary schools and teachers of bilingual children

Workshop goals:
Educating tutors and families for making children ready to start learning to read and to write

  • Helping children to know their vocal and auditory system.

Workshops abstract:
This workshop includes three parts:

  1. Learning Sounds: Introducing Learning Sounds package, explaining its goals, Giving the definition of phonetics and its types and how to work with the package
  2. Learning Alphabet: : Introducing Learning Alphabet package, explaining its goals, Giving suggestions on how to work with the package
  3. Learning Rhythm: Explaining some musical concepts in Learning Sounds book and teaching how to work with Learning Sounds songs

 

Workshop Title:
Art workshops in connection with Book Reading: Plays

Workshop Duration:
3-4 hours (depending on workshop’s title)

Workshops abstract:
There are different techniques in performing a puppetry. So different workshops are offered by Read with Me project, the titles are as followed:

  • Glove Puppets (Making the stage and puppets for the book “Short-legged hen” and performing the play)
  • Marionettes or string puppets (Making the stage and puppets for the book “I ran & ran” and performing the play)
  • Shadow puppet (Making the stage and puppets for the book “Palm Tree and Goat Legend” and performing the play)
  • Making and designing a stage in theatre (performing a play based on the book “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”)
  • Making different kinds of masks for different books

Workshop Title:
Environment Workshop

Who benefits this workshop?

Workshop objectives:
Making a relation between environmental concepts and books in Read with Me project, increasing general environmental knowledge of trainees

What do they learn in the workshop?

  • The definition of Environment, biodiversity, ecosystem and consequences of disturbing the ecosystem
  • Relation between environmental concepts and books, environmental activities related to books
  • Knowing biodiversity in Iran especially the region where the trainees come from

Workshops abstract:
The definition of environment is reviewed and the importance of paying attention to environment in Read with Me project is explained to trainees. Then a group activity is done to know the concept of ecosystem and consequences of human disturbance in the ecosystem. The workshop continues by watching pictures and films from biodiversity in Iran and the region. In the middle and final parts of the workshop, environmental subjects in RWM books are mentioned and some environmental activities in relation with books are suggested.

Workshop Title:
Reading with babies and toddlers

Workshop Duration:
Four 60 minute Sessions

Who benefits this workshop?
Mothers with their babies or toddlers, pregnant mothers and everyone who keeps a baby or toddler

Workshop goals:

Promotion book reading with children since the birth moment and insisting on its effects on mental and social growth in children

Number of participants:
20-25 persons

  • Some cloth and cardboard books for babies and toddlers
  • Fabric in different colors and designs, cardboard, colored papers, old colored magazines, markers, colored pencils, glue

  • The steps of reading aloud with babies until three years old
  • Appropriate books for babies and toddlers/knowing the types
  • Learning Sounds with babies and toddlers and understanding rhythms
  • Making books for babies and toddlers
  • Educational and fun activities for baby’s lingual growth

Workshops abstract:
First of all the importance of speaking and book reading with babies and toddlers is discussed with mothers. The mothers practically learn to sing lullabies and songs with their babies. The way of speaking to baby as a mother is taught and mothers use this language for speaking to their babies in the workshop. A short explanation is given about books for babies and toddlers and mothers experience book reading with their children in the workshop. They make books for their babies and toddlers and they also play games and activities with their child.
