The Read with Me project has started its activity in Ameneh Nursery since June 2014 by the efforts of the Institute for Research on the History of Children’s Literature and the financial support of Fund for Education & Empowerment of Working Children.
After extensive consultations of IRHCL with the Nursery authorities, this project was finally started in June 2014. In this new experience, Read with Me project concentrated on improving children’s listening and speaking skills. At the moment some teachers have been selected to work under the supervision of RWM experts with 2-6 year old children twice a week to improve their listening and speaking skills using the Learning Sounds Packages.
With great consistency since October 2015, by an agreement with the nursery authorities reading with babies and toddlers program was officially started in this nursery. Also the nursery authorities have been eager to cooperate in establishing an appropriate library for babies and toddlers.
By the end of June 2016, 120 sessions of book reading with babies and toddlers and 44 sessions of Learning Sounds and book reading with a new group of older children were held in this center.
Ameneh Nursery which is under the supervision of Shemiranat State Welfare Organization takes care of orphans and children from families in crisis between 0 to 7 years old.
The experts of The Institute for Research on the History of Children’s Literature who had visited this center in May 2014 decided to hold Reading Aloud and Learning Sounds sessions in order to improve the children’s listening and speaking skills. These weekly 90-minute sessions were held from July 2014 to October 2015 for 22 children in 4 groups – divided into age-groups of 2-4 and 4-6 years.
Although a number of these children did not finish the “Learning Sounds Course” for different reasons (the start of kindergartens season in October, moving, adoption and leaving the nursery and etc.), a group of 11 children from 3-6 years old has finished the course and is ready to start the “Learning Alphabet Course”. But unfortunately, the course has been postponed because of interfering with academic year.
By holding Reading Aloud and Learning Sounds sessions, children’s linguistic, cognitive and social development has improved at different levels. Making children interested and connected to books is the other positive influence of the RWM program on children in Ameneh Nursery.
Despite the difficulties, The Institute has established a Read with Me library in Ameneh Nursery. Moreover, two books have been granted to the children in two different occasions, one for the International Children’s Day and the other as a New Year’s gift. Therefore these children have their own books and also a library where they can find and borrow their favorite books and narrate its story.
The library layout has been totally changed. The shelves have become shorter so that the books become reachable for children. Low quality books have been sent out and they have been replaced by quality and selected books.
With great consistency and effort since October 2015 by an agreement with the nursery authorities reading with babies and toddlers program was officially started in this nursery. In the spring of 2016, 16 hours on average was spent each week with 60 babies and 2 hours with a few toddlers. By the end of June 2016, 120 sessions of book reading with babies and toddlers and 44 sessions of Learning Sounds and book reading with a group of older children were held in this center.
