Read with Me Book Reading Sessions for children in Mazar-e-Sharif
The Read with Me project has spread out to regions beyond the borders of Iran in order to bring its motto into practice: “All children have the right to read quality books”. The project has started its activities in Mazar-e-Sharif by the cooperation of the Future for Afghanistan children organization.
After sending the first set of quality books to this region, since December 2016, RWM Reading Aloud sessions have been held for the children covered by this organization. Currently, two centers in Mazar-e-Sharif are holding Reading Aloud sessions. In these sessions, two trained tutors try to share the joy of reading and literature with the deprived children of this region. According to the needs of this region, the RWM authorities along with the Future for Afghanistan children organization are hoping to improve the basic literacy of these children, teach them different skills, develop their living values and empower them to overcome difficulties and to build a society free from violence.
The project covers children from preschool to second grade of Elementary School in Mazar-e-Sharif and nearby towns. In the first round, over 500 selected quality books, 50 “Basic Literacy Improvement through Literature” packages and 80 educational books for teachers and tutors along with different book-related activities and handbooks were sent to this region by the financial support of the Fund for Education & Empowerment of Working Children.
In the last weeks of September 2016, the manager of Future for Afghanistan children organization, Maryam Karimi, with two other tutors from Mazar-e-Sharif travelled to Iran and participated in Read with Me workshops including: “Children’s Literature and Quality Books”, “Story Elements”, “Reading Aloud” and “Role Playing, Facial and Body Expressions” and Basic Literacy Workshops including: “Learning Sounds”, “Learning Alphabet”, “The Dictionary of Riddles” and “Learning Math”. These trained tutors are supposed to familiarize other tutors and volunteers with the Read with Me project and its methods.
“Learning Math” is a package from “Basic Literacy Improvement through Literature” packages, which helps children to develop early math skills in an interesting and indirect instruction.
