This year Iranian National Commission for UNESCO has nominated Read with Me project ‑which is designed and implemented by the Institute for Research on the History of Children’s Literature‑ for the second UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development.
UNESCO awards this prize in cooperation with the Government of Japan. The objective of this prize, which was established by the Executive Board of UNESCO at its 195th session within the framework of the GAP on Education for Sustainable Development and officially announced at the UNESCO World Conference on ESD (10-12 November 2014, Aichi-Nagoya, Japan), is to reward the outstanding efforts of individuals, institutions, organizations or other entities engaged in activities on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The prize is awarded annually to three individuals, institutions, organizations.
The criteria considered to approve the projects are: to bring about changes in person or society for a more just, peaceful and sustainable world; integration of the social, economic and environmental dimensions of development; innovation; to have a high impact relative to the invested resources; contribute to one or more of the five Priority Action Areas of the Global Action Programme (Advancing policy, Transforming learning and training environments, Building capacities of educators and trainers, Empowering and mobilizing youth, Accelerating sustainable solutions at local level).
Nominations submitted by the Member States, are surveyed in Permanent Delegation in Paris and after the assessment of nominations by the Jury till the end of July, the Prize Winners will be announced in Mid-September 2016 and their prize will be awarded at an official Ceremony in October 2016.
In 2015, three projects from Guatemala/El Salvador, Indonesia and Germany were introduced and honored as the first time winners of the prize. The UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development shall consist of US $50,000 and a Plaque of Honor.
Read with Me project with its motto “All children have the right to read quality books” has always tried to empower children and their teachers in this country by innovative approaches and Creative education through Literature with special consideration of living values and the the environment without any kind of discrimination.
