International White Cane Day: experiences with blind and visually impaired children

The 15th day of October is International White Cane Day. On this day, we share with you the experience of a Read with Me teacher with blind and visually impaired students.

Fahimeh Jahantigh teaches in an elementary school for children with special needs in Zahedan, Sistan & Balouchestan Province. She teaches a class of blind or visually impaired students. After participating in the Read with Me workshops, she came up with ideas to share the Basic Literacy Creative Education packages with her students. These packages include animal characters that represent Persian letters and sounds. Each letter has its own song.

In addition to making toys from these animal characters, Jahantigh attached the braille equivalent of each letter to the toys. This way, her students can enjoy learning basic literacy through touch, songs and play.
