Litter cleanup in MahmoudAbad village by children in cultural center
On Monday, 6 June 2016, on the occasion of World Environment Day (5 June), children from MahmoudAbad Cultural Center participated in litter pickup event in this village. In this event which was held to promote environmental culture, about 200 people were engaged including children in different age groups with their mothers or fathers, Cultural Center tutors, Read with Me experts and some guests.
The event was started on 10:00 AM and everyone was given a trash bag, gloves, and hygiene mask. First, the litters were cleaned around a kiln where some residents live. Then the group entered the village and removed litter and debris from the village. Participants raised the residence attention by chanting “Blue Sky and Clean Air are our rights”. After the cleanup, the group moved to a park next to the village and children made a memorable day for them by playing with water in the playground. The event was well-received by children and their families and they asked for more such events. At the end, all the participants were invited to have a snack in the cultural house.
World Environment Day (WED) is observed every year on 5 June to raise global awareness to protect nature and encourage authorities to make decisions to prevent environmental and species destruction. In Iran a week, 4-10 June, is named as environment week.
Holding environment workshops for teachers and tutors and raising children’s awareness and reverence for the environment are one of the fundamental goals of RWM project. Children become more concerned about the environment and the importance of species by reading books with environmental subjects and doing book-related activities.
